Big Thursday for Les

18 Feb, 2010.
BIG Thursday gave owner Les Daley just that when he led throughout to win a 520m Novice at Albion Park on Thursday night.
But the son of Brett Lee-Sunset Doll almost didn't make it.
At 10 months of age, Big Thursday got a grass seed in his throat. The dog had to undergo three operations to finally have it removed.
Big Thursday sped through a 5.70 first section and then held on to score in 30.51 by a length and a quarter.
He downed Sir Trend with three and a half lengths to Running A Dream in third.
Big Thursday has blistering early pace but the 520m is a test. He came home in a final section of 13.07.
"We've been working on his stamina and he seems to be getting a bit stronger," said Les.
Glenda Dart trains the dog who was handled for the victory by her husband John. "Promising," said John of Big Thursday. "We'll take him through his grades."
Les paid $5000 for Big Thursday as a pup and then bought a $1500 Bit Chili bitch to rear with him on his three-acre property at Nundery which is just near Murwillumbah.
"And the bitch is showing great potential," said Les. "She could be something."
Les recently had great success with Sacheen's Wish in the Dart kennel. "She's at home at the moment with a bit of an in jury," said Les. "We'll have a look at her to see if she can come back to racing.
"We'll breed with her eventually."
Les raced the "Teepee" breed of dogs several years ago but when his foundation bitch died, he gave racing away for a short time.
"I'm back in now and have been buying good bloodlines," said Les.
Teepee Love and Awesome Indian were some of his star performers. Awesome Indian ran 25.28 when winning at the Gold Coast.
