Vince Curry a tough final

2 March, 2010.
FORMER Darwin trainer Mick Emery gets his chance to break into the Group spotlight when he lines up with Vince Curry Maiden final favourite Garis Garis at Ipswich on Wednesday night.
The daughter of Black Enforcer-Coonowrin Red has gone through the series unbeaten and her 30.77 semi-final win was the slickest of the qualifyings, quarter and semi-finals.
Emery and his family have been in Queensland for two and a half years.
He has almost 70 dogs on his Churchable property, mostly pups and pre-trainers.
Of Garis Garis he believes the bitch has her best in front of her.
"There is no particular dog that is the hardest to beat tomorrow night," said Mick today. "It's such a hard series, every dog deserves great credit just to make the final."
Garis Garis has done well since her semi-final win and Mick hopes she can quickly find a spot along the rails just behind the early pace.
"I don't like building up a dog's reputation, but we have hopes for her," he said.
Veteran dog man Ray Gatti bred the litter and GQL marking up and ear-branding official Graham Haswell bought her as a six-month-old pup.
He gave her to his daughter Renae to race.
Mick Emery has had Garis Garis, named after a restaurant in Bali, since Haswell bought her from Gatti at six months.
"We reared her, did some early work on her before she went to Elaine and Bevan Williamson to be broken in, and got her back after that," said Mick.
The Haswells were only too happy to leave the bitch to Mick such was the excellent job he had done with her.
"She surprised us she went so well at breaking in," said Mick. "She was always a bit shy as a pup, and still is."
But Garis Garis shows none of that when it comes to the racetrack.
Mick says he will put the bitch through a bit of extra box work after the Vince Curry series is over.
"She can be a little tardy at the boxes, but we haven't changed anything with her in the lead-up to the final," he said.
"Once the race is over, we will sit down with the Haswells and map out her future."
The Vince Curry final is one of the most even on record. All eight finalists have great credentials to win the race worth $25,000 to the winner.
